Description

  • Edward Steichen
  • 'BROOKLYN BRIDGE'
stamped and annotated by Rolf Petersen on the reverse, framed, 1903, probably printed in the 1960s

Literature

A Life in Photography, pl. 29; Edward Steichen: Lives in Photography, pl. 31; Steichen's Legacy, pl. 194

Condition

The photograph is in generally excellent condition. The corners are bumped. Evidence of retouching in the negative is visible in the image. Visible in raking light are a few tiny linear or pinpoint indentations and a very faint linear crease through the middle of the print, neither of which breaks the emulsion. The print has a cool, purple tonality. The print is numbered 'H 2-49-P FO' by Rolf Petersen (Steichen's printer), and annotated 'P.S.W.,' 'HLJV,' 'N.T.,' and other erased notations in various unidentified hands in pencil on the reverse. Our assessment of the print date is based on the stamps and numbering by Rolf Peterson, who printed for Steichen in the 1960s.
