Condition

This warm-toned photograph, with a matte surface, is in generally excellent condition. A few dust specks and two faint surface scratches in the negative are visible. There is a 1/4-inch faint linear chemical deposit in the upper left corner of the print that is visible only under close examination. The photograph is mounted to buff single-weight paper, which is then mounted to grey single-weight paper. On the reverse of the second mount, there are two small sections of an old mount adhered to the upper corners of the grey mount.

Catalogue Note

The full catalogue information for this lot is as follows:

platinum print, initialed 'CHW' by the photographer in red crayon on the image, double-mounted, signed and dated by him in pencil on the second mount, matted, framed, 1910

The photograph offered here of the photographer's son Clarence H. White, Jr., was likely taken White's New York City studio. The photograph dates to 1910, just one year after White opened his well-appointed, sky-lit studio at 5 West 31st Street. White's The Orchard, 1902 can be seen hanging on the studio wall in the upper left quadrant. The Princeton University Art Museum holds one unmounted platinum print of this image in their collection.

Sotheby's wishes to thank Clarence H. White authorities Peter Bunnell and William Homer, as well as Verna Curtis of the Library of Congress, and Joel M. Smith of the Princeton University Art Museum, for their assistance in identifying the sitter and probable location of this photograph.
