Estimate
3,000 - 5,000 GBP
bidding is closed

Description

  • Weegee
  • Weegee with Dorothy Hart, c. 1950
4 silver prints, each bearing on the reverse a Weegee address stamp in ink.

Provenance

Wilma Wilcox to the present owners

Condition

Prints creased, their surfaces marked and the emulsion broken in various places, all entirely consistent with Weegee prints as they are customarily seen. The stamp is the same on the reverse of each : 'Arthur [Weegee] Fellig, 6526 Selma Ave, Hollywood 28, California'. The reverse sides also plainly show the marks of adhesive previously used to fix these prints to a support.

Catalogue Note

Dorothy Hart was the star of Jules Dassin's 1948 film noir Naked City, whose title, subject matter and manner were all either directly taken from Weegee or inspired by him. Weegee worked on the film and seems thoroughly to have enjoyed his brush with Hollywood.
