Catalogue Note

This and the following 15 lots form a series of photographs originally in the Nègre family collection. They comprise salt and albumen prints and photogravures by Charles Nègre (1820-1880), including architectural studies, landscapes, portraits of pifferari, scenes from the Imperial Asylum series of 1858-59, and a series of large sized photogravures made of Chartres cathedral in 1855-57. Included also is a set of photogravures from the publication Voyage d'exploration à la mer morte by the Duc de Luynes, from 1864.

In 1853-54, Nègre photographed a series of scenes de genre of Pifferari, young street musicians, which was a favourite subject for photographers and painters at that time.
