Condition

Very good condition overall with minor wear to the patina and a few remains of verde gris and oxidation in the crevisses of the bronze, and to the back side of her giltbronze dress. Very attractive piece which stands out by his polychromy and the perfectly intact ivory corpus of the lady.

Catalogue Note

Théodore Rivière (1857-1912) fit sa formation à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts et voyagea plusieurs fois en Algérie et à Tunis où il fut fasciné par les ruines de la capitale punique, Carthage. L'inspiration orientale est aussi littéraire, largement tirée du roman Salammbô de Gustave Flaubert. En 1895, il collabora avec Susse qui fondit plusieurs exemplaires de ce sujet. La même année, il reçut pour cette oeuvre une médaille de seconde classe au Salon.
