Catalogue Note
Pilny s'installa à Prague en 1873 avant de voyager pour la première fois en Egypte en 1875. Il resta deux ans en Orient, envouté par "la merveilleuse lumière qui baigne le désert à l'aube et au crépuscule". C'est cette lumière qui le fascina et qui inspira toute son oeuvre.
Il se fixa à Zurich en 1885 puis voyagea en orient entre 1889 à 1892 Sa peinture plut beaucoup au vice-roi d'Egypte Abbas II qui lui remit la décoration de l'ordre du Medjidije en 1906.
Notre tableau est proche par le sujet d'un tableau légèrement plus grand, vendu à Zurich le 23 mars 2007 pour 315 500 francs suisses.
