Relined; The painting is slightly more yellow than the photo shows; the blue drapery is slightly clearer; Some retouchings appear under the UV light, especially on the blue drapery, on the body of the naked slaves and on the face of the slave dealer

Catalogue Note

Le sujet de notre tableau pourrait être inspiré du poème d'Alfred de Musset Namouna. Ce texte, publié en 1832, raconte l'histoire d'Hassan, jeune homme vivant en Orient qui achetait deux esclaves par mois et les renvoyait rapidement afin de ne pas s'y attacher. Il acheta Namouna, jeune espagnole, qui subit le même sort que les autres mais décida de le revoir et trouva un marchand qui la vendit une seconde fois à Hassan. Notre tableau illustre probablement la seconde présentation de Namouna à Hassan.
