Catalogue Note
Auguste Borget fit de nombreux voyages en Amérique du Nord et du Sud, en Australie, en Extrême-Orient, notamment en Inde et en Chine. Il en rapporta des tableaux illustrant des scènes de la vie populaire dans ces différents pays, qui furent exposés au Salon de Paris entre 1836 et 1859.
Un tableau de sujet proche, Mosquée indienne sur le bord de la rivière Hoogly, près de Calcutta, daté 1846, de dimensions légèrement plus grandes (59,6 x 74,9 cm) s'est vendu à Londres en 1998 pour £38 500.
