Description

  • two putti adoring a banner with a female figure
  • white marble on an integrally carved pedestal with green marble panels
  • Italian, Naples, second half 18th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the marbel is good. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. Four, previously reattached, fingers are missing from the proper left hand of the standing putto. The little finger on the left hand of the seated putto and the pointed tip on the banner are loose.

Similar groups of putti with inlaid bases have traditionally been associated with Giuseppe Sanmartino. Compare other allegorical groups sold at Christie's London, 10 December 1996, lot 73 and another sold at Sotheby's London, 13 December 1991, lot 254.
