Description

  • belt buckle with a knight
  • gilt and champlevĂ© enamelled copper
each section inscribed in red ink: 8898A to C

Condition

The buckle is in three pieces: the back plate is loose from the decorated plate causing the clsp to be loose as well. There is some corrosion and greening to the metal. There are losses to the enamel at the clasp, under the knight's right arm and top right section of the front plate. The prong is lost. There is some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age.

A similar belt buckle decorated with a beast was exhibited at the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1995/1996.
