Work ri-lined. From a first hand inspection three results of clearing away old varnish are visible (see image in the catalogue). There are slight abrasion along the frame and few small losses in the sky. The ultra violet light reveals some retouches between the two mast of the ship on the left, a minor one in the middle of house with the red flag and another other the gondola's prow in the center of the composition. The light reveals a thick fluorescent varnish dishomogeneously spread over the surface that makes difficult to recognise other retouches. The works needs a careful cleansing to give back light and colour to the surface. the overall condition as to the state of preservation is good.

Allievo di Émile Loubon a Marsiglia e di Costant Troyon a Parigi, Brest espone al Salon di Parigi nel 1851 e nel 1896.

Nel 1855, incoraggiato da Troyon, col quale aveva intrapreso il primo viaggio in Palestina, riparte trascorrendo i quattro anni successivi in Asia Minore e a Costantinopoli. Tra i pittori orientalisti si distingue quale originale testimone di questa nuova e affascinante cultura. Coltiva un gusto personale a volte poetico, altre pittoresco, rievocando sulle tele il fascino di paesaggi straordinari dalle tonalità chiare e ricercate, mentre le scene di vita quotidiana sono rese con forte gusto dell'osservazione e ricchezza di effetti luminosi.

Carico di questa preziosa esperienza acquisita in medio oriente, l'artista giunge a Venezia negli anni '60. Brest sviluppa le sue capacità di pittore eclettico tra i canali e le calli della città, realizzando opere in cui anche le classiche composizioni architettoniche sono arricchite da un coreografico brulicare di figure. Come poesia, queste rappresentazioni esprimono elegantemente l'atmosfera dei luoghi che lo affascinano, dove una materia ricca di luci e colori fa da padrona.
