Description

  • Maestro della Natività Johnson
  • Madonna con Bambino e San Giovannino
  • olio su tavola centinata

Condition

The colours in the painting are a little less saturated than in the catalogue illustration. The support of this powerful 15th century image consists of two vertical panels joined by three dovetails. Overall a slight bow is present. The panel join is visible from the front. The paint surface is dirty and under a discoloured varnish. Several small scattered losses are present, some of which have been infilled. St John's staff has faded somewhat and a 20 cm crack is present along the lower part of the join. Several old scattered retouchings are present in the Madonna's cloak as well as some others, all of which are visible to the naked eye. Some repainting has taken place on the lighter parts of John's cloak. 2 surface scratches can be made out on the Madonna. The painting would benefit from some restorative attention. Offered in a finely decorated frame in good condition with small losses.
