The painting is slightly less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests. The heavy panel has a slight bow and a dent on the reverse but appears stable. Old inactive worm holes are present, a few have come through to the painted surface. The paint surface is otherwise in good condition. The varnish has discoloured a little and the colour is a little worn in the red cloak but the details are well preserved in the hand, the rope, highlights of the hair, the eye lashes and thorns. Inspection under UV light reveals only minor retouchings and confirms the good condition. Overall the powerful image retains its dynamism.
