Catalogue Note

For other portraits of the philosopher Zenon, a rare representation, see G.M.A. Richter, The Portraits of the Greeks, vol. II, London, 1965, pp. 186-189, figs. 1084-1105.

Zenon (333/331-264/261 B.C. ) was the founder of Stoic philosophy. Gisela Richter (op.cit, p.186) writes that Zenon "developed a vast system comprising logic, physics, and ethics... it was his ethical teaching, however, that most appealed, and through which Stoicism became popular and famous." The Athenians "praised him for his 'virtue and temperence'...'for which his own life served as a pattern'".
