Catalogue Note

This pictorial type of the Virgin Nursing the Christ Child [Maria Lactans] became popular in Bruges during the 15th century.  It is a variant on the pose of the Virgin and Child in Rogier van der Weyden's St. Luke Drawing the Virgin (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, inv. no. 93.153), and was employed by Gerard David and the Master of the Legend of St. Ursula, as well as by artists in Isenbrant's workshop.1
