Description

  • St John the Baptist
  • oil on panel, oval, unframed

Condition

The catalogue illustration is faithful to the original. The support consist of a single, flat, oval panel. The paint surface is secure and under a thick, uneven and discoloured varnish. The impasto is well preserved. The paint surface looks and feels in sound condition under the thick varnish, though the latter impedes satisfactory inspection under UV light. Some old retouchings along the edges is present, where some old frame abrasion has occurred. Some very minor paint loss has occurred in the Baptist's hair. The painting is offered unframed and its tonality would greatly benefit from a new varnish.

Catalogue Note

The composition appears to be based upon the head and shoulders of St John in the larger canvas depicting Christ and St John the Baptist, in the Chiesa dei Gerolamini in Naples, although there are some differences, notably in the positioning of the hands and cross (see S. Pepper, Guido Reni, Oxford 1984, cat. no. 123, fig. 114).
