Description
- The penitent St Francis of Assisi
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has an old and rather rigid was relingni which has tended to press the paint surface. The picture itself is now dirty and the varish layer very discoloured. Overall the paint surface is quite well preserved, with no major damages or repairs in evidence. There are some scattered old repairs in various parts; the largest of these is an old repaired horizontal tear some 10 cm long just above and to the left of the book. The densest areas of restoration, perhaps caused by previous flaking, are to be found to the right profile of the saint, his beard and around and below the hand holding the crucifix. There is a small repair to a 2 x 2 cm loss on his neck. The background landscape has become a little worn in the sky and there has been some strengthening here, and some repairs to scattered small losses in the background.
This lot is offered with a ebonised wood frame with a gilt egg and dart moulding sight edge.
