Benigno Crespi, Milan, no. 120 (according to an old label on the reverse).

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is secure and in good condition with fine craquelure throughout and under a dirty varnish. There is an old horizontal damage upper centre in the sky approx 20 by 3 cm where retouching is evident. There are some other minor areas of retouching which are revealed by inspection under UV light the largest of which is approx 3 by 3cm, two in the left hand side of the sky and a further two to the left of the group of Putti in the stream. Minor scattered retouchings are also present in the figures of Mary and the Christ Child. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in fair condition with some knocks.
