Description

  • Jan Miense Molenaer
  • Tavern interior with peasants playing cards
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Frederica Mary Primrose, 1898 (according to a label on the reverse);
Bought by the great-grandfather of the present owner in the 1930s.

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone and less red than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable and no damages are apparent. The paint surface is secure if a little abraded in the darker areas. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Some small scattered retouchings can be observed in the background and in the figure in the foreground. Inspection under UV light reveals some additional scattered retouchings, e.g. in along the edges, lower centre right, and in the clothes of the background figures. Offered in a decorative gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition.
