Provenance

Miss Esther Matossi, Zurich;

With J.O. Leegenhoek, Paris, 1982, where bought by the family of the present owner.

Condition

The actual painting is a little more natural in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The oak panel seems to consist of two planks joined horizontally, of which the upper plank seems to have cracked. The join is slightly unstable and requires attention. The panel has a wide, wood and metal cradling to the reverse. The paint surface is generally sound with subtle details intact. Strengthening of the outlines can be made out with the naked eye as well as some minor retouchings in the sky. Inspection under UV light reveals additional tiny scattered retouchings in the sky, in the foreground lower right, in the trees and in the roofs. Offered in a plain fruit wood frame with tortoise shell inlay, in good condition.
