Description

  • Nicolaes Maes
  • Portrait of a lady, half length, wearing a white and yellow satin dress with a blue shawl and pearl jewellery
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Collection Sainctelette, Brussels;
His deceased sale, Brussels, 23 November 1923, lot 21.

Condition

The actual painting is somewhat softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a slightly stiff but effective relining. The paint surface is under a very dirty varnish. There's a fine craquelure throughout which is beginning to lift in some areas and there are some small scattered losses to the upper left. Otherwise, the paint layer seems to be well preserved. Inspection under UV light is inconclusive due to the varnish. In general, in overall good condition. Offered in a decorative carved gilt wood frame with a few paint losses.
