Description

  • Herman Saftleven
  • Barn interior with a ruined water well, copper pots, baskets and other objects, together with three ducks
  • signed in monogram lower left: HSL(in compendium) f
  • oil on panel

Provenance

With J.O. Leegenhoek, Paris, where bought in the 1970s by the family of the present owner.

Condition

The actual painting is a little less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable, and is bevelled on all but the upper sides. Two thin horizontal splits each of approx. 1 cm. are visible along the left edge and there's minor damage in the lower left corner. The paint surface is under a thick glossy, and slightly dirty varnish. The paint surface appears well preserved though there are some areas of abrasion in the background. Minor retouchings can be made out in the roof and in the background, but in particular the paint in the still life on the left is well preserved with the impasto and subtle detail intact. Inspection under UV light reveals a few additional small scattered retouchings, but is further impeded by the thick varnish. Offered in a decorative wood frame with tortoise shell inlay with some chips.
