Description

  • Dirck van der Lisse
  • Italianate landscape with shepherds and cattle among roman ruins
  • signed in monogram lower centre: DV(in compendium) L.
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Dr. Herbert Girardet, Kettwig;
Thence by descent.

Exhibited

Cologne, Wallfraf-Richartz-Museum, on loan, until 2009.

Condition

The actual painting is less red and more natural in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single flat panel is in good condition, apart from a small damage in the upper left corner. The paint surface is under a slightly yellowed varnish. The paint surface is generally sound, though a little thin in some of the darker areas. Some tiny discoloured retouchings can be observed in the rocks and sky. Inspection under UV light reveals additional scattered retouchings and strengthening of the cows and figures. Offered in a plain parcel gilt wood frame in fair condition.
