Description

  • Gortzius Geldorp
  • Portrait of a man, bust length, wearing a black costume with a white ruff
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Bought by the great-grandfather of the present owner in the 1930s.

Condition

The actual painting is a little warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel seems to consist of three planks joined vertically and is cradled to the reverse. The paint surface is under a glossy and fairly clear layer of varnish. The paint surface is somewhat abraded and subsequent (discoloured) retouchings are visible along the joins, in the right half of his face and more frequently in the background. Inspection under UV light reveals some larger areas of retouching in the background and some additional scattered ones on the figure's face and coat. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame in good condition.
