Condition

The actual painting is less red and softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined (wax). The paint surface is in good condition, and under a fine layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. It is a bit rubbed in the right background, which also reveals some small retouchings. Minor strengthening can be seen in the architecture upper right. Tiny discoured retouchings are visible in the hands and coat. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms this and reveals scattered tiny retouchings throughout, e.g. in his head, clothing, the sky, and a more larger area around his right hand. Furthermore, minor strengthening is revealed in the table, statue and sleeves. Offered in a gilt plaster frame, a few chips. (ML)
