Description

  • Hendrick Verschuring
  • Portrait of a young man, half length, wearing a black costume with flat collar and a white chemise, and a white satin sash
  • signed and indistinctly dated centre right: H.verschüring. f/ Ao 165.
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is a deeper and greener in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel has minor worm damage to the reverse, but is sound and in good condition. The panel has been enlarged with thin strips of wood to all sides, possibly to fit the frame. The paint layer is well preserved and is under a clear layer of varnish. Tiny scattered retouchings can be observed, e.g. in the background and in the black coat. Inspection under UV light reveals a thin retouched vertical split upper centre above the had, and a few additional retouchings, a tiny spot in the figure's forehead and collar. Overall, the painting is in good condition. Offered in a plain black wood frame in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

Hendrick Verschuring is mostly known for his horse and battle scenes, and elegant hunting companies, which clearly reflect the influence of his contemporary Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668). This lovely portrait is one of very few he painted throughout his career. The figure's features and the handling of the fabrics are stylistically close to another portrait by the artist, signed and dated 1658, which was with Leger Galleries, London, by 1953.
