Description

  • Juriaan van Streek
  • still life with peaches and an orange in a porcelain Wan-Li kraak bowl, a Chinese ovoid shaped porcelain jar, and a silver-gilt nautilus cup, together with a fluit and another glass, a bread roll and a knife, all on a stone table partly draped with a black velvet cloth
  • indistinctly signed lower left: J.v. Stre.k.
  • oil on canvas, unlined

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is unlined, but retains much of its bounce. Stretcher marks are slightly visible to the front. To the right side the original canvas is approx. 2.5 cm. larger, but folded around the stretcher. The paint surface is very well preserved. The paint surface is under slightly dirty and shiny layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals three tiny retouched paint losses, centre left, centre right, and lower right corner, and very tiny retouchings in the orange lower centre. Overall, the painting is in excellent condition. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame. (MW)

Catalogue Note

This painting displays Van Streek's artistic skills, especially evident in the differentiated textures of the heavy velvet drapery, the fragile porcelain, the sparkling silverware of the Nautilus cup, and the flower dusted bread roll.
Van Streek did not date his paintings, and he appears to have maintained a consistent style throughout his career. He relied on a restricted number of, mainly vertical, compositions, using the same or very similar props in many works.
There are several compositions by Van Streek that are very similar to this one, such as the one sold in these Rooms, 8 May 2007, lot 102. Another closely related work is in the Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal, Leiden (inv. no. 418).
