Description

  • Andreas Martin
  • A mountainous river landscape with figures conversing on a path, near a classical building
  • signed lower left (strengthened): Andreas.martien.
  • oil on panel

Provenance

The Hon. Mrs. Webb (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The actual painting is softer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable and beveled on all sides. There's a minor tendency towards flaking in the upper left corner, but otherwise, no damages are apparent. The paint surface is secure and under a dull and slightly discoloured layer of varnish. There's a fine and dense craquelure throughout. Tiny scattered retouchings and strengthenings are visible in the trees on the left and in the centre and lower right foreground. Inspection under UV light reveals a few additional tiny retouched paint losses along the left edge and centre left. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame in fair condition. (MW)
