  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Mak van Waay, 5 June 1934, lot 730 (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The actual painting is less red and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of 2 horizontal planks and is cradled. The paint surface is well preserved, if a little abraded in the sky, and is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Small retouchings can be observed along the join, as well as a few scattered ones in the sky. Inspection under UV light reveals a few additional small ones in the lower foreground and minor strengthening in the ships on the left and houses on the right. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame with a few minor chips. (MW)
