Condition

The actual painting is warmer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel seems to consist of three planks and is cradled. The panel is flat and stable. The paint layer is secure if a little abraded in the coat and hat and under a very dirty and dull varnish layer. A few thin retouched surface scratches can be observed centre left and centre right, and a few small old retouchings are visible to the lower left, and to the background upper left and right. Inspection under UV light reveals additional ones in the hat and coat and two tiny spots in the sitter's cheek. Offered in an ebonised brown wood frame with a gilt fillet in good condition. (MW)
