Description

  • Lorenz Strauch
  • Portrait of a young man, head and shoulders, in a black robe with a white lace collar
  • dated and signed in monogram centre left: Ao,/  i607./ .LS. (in compendium)
  • oil on copper, oval, unframed

Provenance

P. van Wijck, Oosterbeek;
His deceased sale, Den Haag, Van Stockum, 19 July 1943, lot 42.

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single copper is slightly warped but stable. The paint surface is secure and generally sound. A few tiny discoloured retouchings are visible in the background centre right, in the face and around the left ear. Inspection under UV light is largely impeded by the thick and slightly dirty varnish layer, but additional scattered retouchings can be made out under the varnish. This lot is offered unframed. Offered together with another painting on a single copper, flat and stable. The paint layer is generally sound and under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. A few retouchings are visible along the upper edge and to the lower centre, which is confirmed by inspection under UV light. Overall, in good condition. Offered in a later plain wood frame in good condition. (MW)
