Description

  • Jacob Foppens van Es
  • Still life of blue and white grapes, together with wild strawberries, all in a basket, on a wooden ledge
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Munich, Helbing, 1903, lot 25 (as by D. Seghers).

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting. The panel consists of three horizontal planks, and is cradled. The joins have been retouched and are visible to the front. There is some paint losses along the right edge in the centre, as can be seen on the catalogue illustration. The paint surface appears to be in good condition, although is a little thin in the background and lower foreground, and is under a slightly dirty and glossy layer of varnish. Some scattered retouchings can be observed in the background, along the joins and to the lower left. Inspection under UV light is partially impeded by the varnish layer, but does reveal a few tiny additional retouchings in the basket and minor strengthening in the blue grapes. Offered in a decorative carved gilt wood frame in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the R.K.D., The Hague for endorsing the attribution to Van Es on the basis of photographs. Van Es, who spent his entire life in Antwerp, devoted himself solely to still lifes, often of fruit in baskets set on plain ledges, like the present work.
