Description

  • Jan Van Kessel the Elder
  • The Eucharist: a gold chalice, a host and two silver candelabras in a stone niche, surrounded with bunches of grapes and corn, and a garland of roses, Morning Glory, Parrot tulips and other flowers, together with butterflies and other insects
  • inscribed centre: EGO SVM PANIS/ VIVVS
  • oil on panel, stamped on the reverse with the panel maker's mark of François de Bout, who became a Master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1637/8

Condition

The actual painting is a lot deeper in tone and less pale than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single piece of panel is bevelled on all sides and has a convex bow to it. The paint surface has not suffered from this bow and is still very well preserved, only in the lower left corner a very light tendency towards cupping can be detected. Inspection under Ultra Violet light reveals a few tiny retouchings in the lower left corner, as well as a few in the flowers below and in the background to the right. The paint layer is under a clear varnish. Offered in a ebonised, cabinet style wooden frame, in very good condition. (ML)

Catalogue Note

Representations of the Eucharist such as this are rare in Van Kessel's oeuvre; another example was with Rafael Valls, London, in 1999.
