Description

  • David Teniers the Younger
  • A peasant's wedding feast
  • bears remains of a signature lower right: D T.

  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is warmer and deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old somewhat firm relining, which is a little wobbly along the lower edge. No damages are apparent and the paint surface appears to be sound. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Some small retouchings can be observed in the sky, in the houses and a few in some of the figures. Under UV light additional small scattered retouchings can be made out underneath the varnish. Offered in a plain wood frame with a gilt fillet in fair condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

This painting appears to be a high-quality studio work deriving from the original composition by David Teniers the Younger, signed and dated 1650, in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (inv. no. 1719).Like many other village festivals in Teniers' oeuvre, the Peasant Wedding of 1650 enjoyed vast popularity, which is shown by the numerous versions, variants and replicas that emanated from his studio and other artists within his circle.
