Description
- Tethart Philipp Christian Haag
- A longhaired black-and-white dog with bushy tail and two brown spotted white puppies in an interior
- signed and dated lower centre right: TPCH(in compendium)aag/ pinx ad./ 1792.
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Paul Brandt, 22-28 May 1973, lot 137.
Condition
The actual painting is softer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old relining. There is a patched restored tear upper right, and another restored tear centre right. A few smaller repaired and retouched damages are visible to the upper background. Otherwise, the paint surface is secure and the dogs have been nicely preserved. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty varnish layer. Small discoloured retouchings can be observed in the background and in the green drapery. Inspection under UV light is largely impeded by the varnish layer, but does reveal additional retouchings along the upper edge, and in the tale and hind-paws of the large dog.
Offered in a plain gilt wood frame, with green velours inlay in good condition. (MW)
