Condition

The catalogue illustrations are representative for the actual paintings, although the actual paintings are a little less red in tone. Both paintings have an old (wax) relining. In both paintings there's a fine craquelure throughout. Both paint layers are secure, if a little abraded in some areas, and are under a very dirty layer of varnish. In both paintings a few scattered discoloured retouchings can be observed, with more significant ones in the painting of Saint Matthew, as is also visible in the catalogue illustration. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforesaid and reveals no further retouchings. Offered in plain wood frames with gilt fillets in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

Little is known about the life and work of Johannes Verhoeven, called both Jan and Hans. In 1618 he entered the Guild of Saint Luke, and by 1642 he was recorded as a portrait and history painter in Malines.
It is likely that the present paintings originally belonged to a series of apostles, because a Saint Bartholomew, similarly signed and of identical measurements was sold, London, Philips, 10 July 2001, lot 220.
