Description

  • Bernardo Llorente Germán
  • a still life with a candlestick, a box of sweets with a spoon, scissors, a mirror, a glass bowl, a shaving brush, the sheets of a play and a jug on a wooden table, a trompe l'oeil drawing hanging on the wall together with a box
  • signed with monogram lower left: D
  • oil on canvas, marouflaged on to panel

Condition

The colours of the original are a little brighter than they appear in the catalogue illustration. The canvas has been laid on board and the paint surface is somewhat flattened as a result. Scattered old minor retouching work is evident in the table in the foreground and inspection under UV light reveals further retouching work throughout, most notably in the darks of the background although the still life elements bottom right remain largely untouched. Offered in a black painted frame with gilt moldings, structurally sound with some knocks.

Catalogue Note

The sheets of paper appear to be the opening of a play by Agustín Moreto (1618-1669), a Spanish Golden-Age dramatist.
