Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The poplar panel has an unstable vertical join, three horizontal bracing bars and period additions to the left and right edges. The sky has been almost entirely repainted. There are minor pin prick losses throughout the surface, areas where the ground colour is dominant and thinned paint that has been augmented, excessively so in some areas, e.g. the faces of the figures. Areas in good condition include much of the drapery, the foliage, the rocks and the tree trunk, right, where the paint texture and impasto are preserved. The varnish is significantly discoloured and its removal would enhance the tonality."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
