Description

  • A pair of male saints, possible St Gervase and st Protase
  • oil and tempera on panel, gold ground, shaped top

Condition

The panel support is stabilised by two vertical battens. To the reverse of the panel are stuck patches of gauze and horse hair. The apnit surface is secure with some craquelure throughout. Cracks and losses in the paint surface are present lower right and left. Surface scuffs and scratches can be found on the paint surface. The gold graound has worn but the punchwork is still in good condition. Scattered retouchings have discoloured and these can be seen with the naked eye, as well as small infilled losses. The underdrawing can be made out in the saint to the right. Inspection under UV light is impeded by the thick varnish. The painting would benefit from a clean and is offered in a later wooden frame with some knocks.
