Description
- Andrea di Bartolo
- Saint Stephen;Saint Lawrence
- a pair, both tempera on panel, gold ground
Condition
The figures of the two saints are dirty and in good original condition with some minor scattered retouching work. The punch marked halos, cuffs and collars of both saints also appear to be original. In both panels the surrounding gold with the dotted punch marks is a later addition, it seems that the figures once had integral frames which have since been shaved off, exposing the wood beneath which was then gilded and dotted to appear uniform with the saints and their halos. The right hand panel has a horizontal strip of wood approx 1 cm wide added to the top and a second vertical strip approx 0.5 cm added to the left hand edge. These two separate panels have been set into a later arched wooden frame with some knocks and placed in a larger stained wooden frame with a glass front.
