STRUCTURE The panel is in good condition and is providing a strong, flat support for the painting. STRUCTURE TEST Dendrochronological analaysis of this painting reveals that the panel is of English origin, with growth rings dating to between 1517 and 1560. Accounting for the seasoning of the timber and the removal of sapwood rings, the painting can be dated roughly to the late 1570s. We are greatful to Prof. Dr. Peter Klein, of the University of Hamburg, for analysing this painting. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is some very minor deteriation to the paint surface at the edges of the panel and there is a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish overall. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the background on the right of the paintnig, as well some further scattered minor retouching to other areas of the background. Ultraviolet light also confirms the opacity of the varnish. FRAME The painting is unframed.
