Description
- The Adoration of the Magi
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has an old but still effective relining. The paint surface has fine craquelure throughout and is under a thick, discoloured and uneven varnish which prevents close inspection. Small restored tears centre, lower centre and centre right can be made out, as well as some further damage in the lower right corner. The turbaned king to the right has had a 3 cm by 3 cm area of restoration applied to his face. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouchings but the aforementioned varnish impedes satisfactory analysis. Some paint flaking has occurred along the edges, probably due to old frame abrasion. Cleaning the paint surface and applying a new varnish would greatly benefit the painting.
