Description
- Gaspare Landi
- Portrait of a Knight of the order of Saint John (Malta) seated beside a stone ledge, wearing a green coat and a white waistcoat, holding a quil and a book
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has an effective relining which has not overly flattened the paint surface. The paint surface is secure and under a slightly discoloured varnish. Some surface scuffs can be made out with the naked eye. Inspection under UV light reveals a 10 cm by 10 cm area of restoration lower right, a restored vertical tear of 10 cm in the trousers, as well as other areas of retouching in the clothes, and some strengthening to the outlines. Aprox 10 cm above the sitter's face a 6 by 10 cm area of restoration is present. In the sitter's face retouchings are present above the left eye, on the left cheek and on the chin. Overall the painting would benefit from a clean and a new varnish to improve the tonality. Offered in a wood and plaster frame with some knocks.
