Catalogue Note
The sitter was the son of the Reverend John Craven, vicar of Staunton Lacy. He succeeded to the title on the death in 1769 of his uncle WIlliam. In 1767 he married Elizabeth daughter of Augustus 4th Earl of Berkeley.
Craven was also painted by Thomas Beach (a full length portrait sold at Christie's on 13th April 1923, lot 74), who also painted a large portrait of all his children (sold Christie's, 18th April 1996, lot 13).
