Description

  • Cesare Dandini
  • Saint John
  • inscribed on the back of the relined canvas: Guido Reni pinx.
  • oil on canvas, oval, relined as a rectangle

Condition

The oval canvas has been relined with a rectangular canvas which is still taut. The paint surface is secure but flattened in several places. Abrasion is present in some background and darker areas. A 15 cm restoered tear is visible in the lower right. Other discoloured retouchings and surface scuffs are visible to the naked eye, eg. below the chin and upper centre. UV light reveals some further retouchings for example to the eyes. A clean and new varnish would benefit this painting. This lot is offered in a later wood and plaster frame in good condition.
