Condition

Illustrated left: BOTH CANVASES ARE RELINED. There are some restored damages at the extreme lower margin and another to the very left of the middle distance buildings. There are some retouched blues in the river, some of the branches have been lightly strengthened and the sky has undergone some light, washed strengthening. Illustrated right: There are some restored damages in the lower left foreground and another just above the centre on the right hand margin. There are some small restored damages in the sky upper left and patches of the sky are lightly strengthened. In all other respects the paintings are in good overall condition.

These landscapes are particularly close in handling to a number of works executed by Guardi towards the end of his career in the 1770s and 1780s; see, for example, the river landscape, of very similar dimensions, in a private collection, Lugano, or the slightly smaller work in the Musée de Picardie (see A. Morassi, Guardi. I dipinti, vol. I, Venice 1993, pp. 494-5, nos. 998a and 1000, reproduced vol. II, figs. 882 and 884).
