Description

  • Jacobus Storck
  • A mediterranean harbour capriccio with elegant figures boarding gondolas
  • oil on panel

Condition

The support consists of three horizontal panels which have been joined to the reverse. In the past the top join was supported by a series of batons which have since been removed and the lower join was held together with an old canvas strip which has since disintegrated. The whole panel is now contained within a recent rectangular stretcher with two vertical batons. There is an old horizontal crack approx 35 cm long lower right running from the right hand edge. Along the lines of the horizontal joins and crack the paint has started to lift, especially top left where it has started to flake off. The paint surface is otherwise secure if a little abraded in areas. Inspection under UV light reveals minor scattered retouchings and strenghtenings, most notably along the line of the bottom crack. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame, a little rubbed with some minor cracks.
