Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined and there is one patch, verso, in the upper right. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. Two areas of old retouching are visible in the lower section of the canvas, one in the bible and the other in the sitter's robes. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals minor retouching to the hair line and around the right eye. There is some strengthening and retouching to the background, particularly to one area behind the sitter's back to centre right, as well as scattered areas in the costume. FRAME Held in a carved and gold painted wooden frame.
