Description

  • Edward Bower
  • Portrait of a Lady by a fountain, full length, wearing a dark green dress
  • oil on canvas

Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas appears to be unlined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in fairly good condition, though the paint is rubbed in the costume. There is some damage to the paint in the sitter's right forearm, with attendant restoration, as well as rubbing in the base of the fountain. There is a discoloured varnish overall which renders the flesh tones very yellow. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the discolouration and opacity of the varnish, and reveals scattered strengthening and retouching in the costume and the edges of the canvas, particularly in the background to the left of the sitter. FRAME Held in a composite plaster and wood, painted frame.
