Description

  • The Descent from the Cross
  • oil on panel, unframed

Condition

The support consists of a single panel with a very slight convex bow and two old horizontal grooves to the reverse. There are two vertical restored cracks visible to the reverse, one on the left and the other on the right, which run from the upper edge three quarters of the way down the panel. Neither crack are visible to the front. There are a number of old vertical splits in the panel. One approx 10 cm upper left, another approx 5 cm lower left. There are two vertical surface cracks of approx 5 cm one upper right and another upper left. The paint has flaked off along the lines of these splits and cracks and there are some old wood worn holes scattered throughout but the paint surface is otherwise secure and in fair condition retaining much of its original impasto under an old dirty varnish. Scattered old discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye and these are confirmed under UV light. Offered unframed.
